ARGH. I just spent quite a bit of time typing out a rather lengthy opinion about Thio's s 377A speech . But for some strange reason Blogger decided to eat it up! So this is a cliffnotes version. 1. I thought the jibes and graphic descriptions of homosexual acts were offensive, inappropriate, unnecessary, and detracted from her point, which was... well, I forgot, all I got from that portion of her speech was that she thinks gays are stupid people who would stuff straws up their noses. And she really really has a problem with them. 2. Do I think sodomy is wrong? Yes, because I am Christian and the Bible says so. It also says pre-marital sex is wrong. And not honouring your father and mother. But I do not think all these should be criminalized. 3. I accept that sodomy is unhealthy. But the health risks are no different whether it is being performed between men or between a man and a woman. The argument that homosexual sodomy is more harmful because of the greater promiscuity and higher frequency levels in the gay community is missing the point. If there should be any distinction made between different 'levels' of sodomy, it should be based on frequency, instead of gender. 4. I think the final position adopted by the government on this issue is rather sad. Why keep a law you have no intention on enforcing? This position strips the law in general of the primacy it should have. -- tee @ 1:14 pm | |
