Just finished reading Nick Hornby's A Long Way Down, and can't decide whether I like it. The writing is a little choppy; while I appreciate the effort it takes to write from the points of view of all 4 of them, I think it makes the narrative a bit too disjointed, and confirmed for me a fact that didn't actually require any confirmation - that it is a pain to read the writing of a teenage girl who thinks that people who use words like "cogitate" are tossers. The premise is pretty interesting though - 4 strangers meeting at a popular suicide spot on New Year's Eve; a bit too depressing a story to start the year with, but it does engage, although the ending left me hanging in that typical ambivalent Nick Hornby way. The characters, though stereotypical, were very believable, although the aforementioned girl was plain irritating and made me wish she'd just jumped and spared us the misery.
Anyway that was I think Part 2 of my birthday gift from the local chingchongs. Whom, together with Yishi and Esther, I met up with that day. Were supposed to eat at Kuishinbo but it was full so ended up at Ichiban Boshi instead. If any of you are planning to go there, do not try the Wafu Steak set. It may look really nice, but it really isn't that great and you could get a better meal like the Business Bento set for a cheaper price. And then KL YW and I headed over to MoS where Paul was celebrating his birthday (happy birthday Paul). And I don't know why everyone says the queues are so legendarily long but we reached there at around 10 plus 11 and it was a Wednesday night and yet we didn't even have to queue! Anyway I didn't quite like the music. The R&B was too unfamiliar and the music in the main arena was too confused. Ended up leaving at about 12.30.
Well I can't believe school is starting again. Really not ready to start! But I said that the last holidays and school still started anyway and I still went and I'm still alive so maybe it won't be that bad. I hope. But we're doing Public Law and Equity and Trusts - what are the odds? Anyway, here are some pictures from the holidays that just passed.
