my life in a box

Today I was my last day at the Bishan Home. Tonight Esther informed me that there was a scabies outbreak there, and that outsiders aren't supposed to be allowed in. I was mildly worried, till I found out that it's just a skin disease caused by mites that manifests itself in the form of rashes, and has nothing to do with rabies or mad cow disease. Yesterday was Games Day so we got to interact with the residents, which was good in the interesting-and-meaningful way. I was a guide, so I basically was attached to this sweet girl who calls herself "Ah-Yi" and had to bring her around to the various stations. With my limited Hokkien vocabulary (which I never knew I possessed), I actually managed to cajole her into participating in the dancing thing. I think she enjoyed it. Funny how the happiest people around are perhaps those that may seem like they don't have much to be happy about on the surface. Maybe it's cos they have little to worry about. Or, like the sign on the wall said, cos "God careth for [them]" too.
